The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unexpected Presence
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
