Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.
